Shirley Heights Guide
Panoramic Views and Island Vibes: Discover Shirley Heights Guide
Shirley Heights is a historic military complex located on a hilltop overlooking English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour in Antigua. More than just a historical site, it's a vibrant destination offering breathtaking panoramic views, lively music, and a taste of Antiguan culture. Prepare to be captivated by the stunning scenery and the infectious energy of this iconic landmark. Originally built as a military lookout and gun battery in the 18th century, Shirley Heights played a crucial role in defending Antigua from potential invaders. The strategic location provided a commanding view of the surrounding coastline, allowing the British to monitor shipping activity and detect approaching enemy ships. While the fortifications are no longer in use, the site has been preserved and transformed into a popular tourist attraction. The main draw of Shirley Heights is undoubtedly the spectacular views. From the hilltop, you can see across English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, Montserrat (on a clear day), and the surrounding coastline. The Sunday afternoon/evening party is a must-do, featuring live reggae and steelpan music, delicious BBQ, and a lively atmosphere. During the week, you can still visit the site to explore the ruins, enjoy the views, and have a meal at the restaurant. The restaurant offers a variety of Caribbean dishes, including jerk chicken, grilled fish, and local specialties. Be sure to try the rum punch, a classic Caribbean cocktail.
